Sony FX5 Rental in Da Nang: What Projects It Suits

CINEFY has the Sony FX5 in full kit with XLR handle, on rental in Da Nang from Q3 2026. 16-bit RAW inside the body, GM II zooms on hand, plus when the FX3 wins.

Sony FX5 body ports, rental in Da Nang from CINEFY

CINEFY has bought the Sony FX5 in the full kit with the XLR handle, and the body joins our Da Nang inventory in Q3 2026 for rental. It is the first compact body in this class that records 16-bit RAW internally, and it lands next to a complete GM II zoom set we already own. Here is why we bought it, which projects should rent it, and when the FX3 is still the better call.

Why CINEFY decided to buy the FX5

In late July, when the FX5 had just been announced, our internal read was to wait. Nothing had shipped, nobody had taken one on a job, and the cost around the body adds up to more than the body itself. Three things changed that conclusion.

First, a project needed exactly this setup. A documentary that moves constantly, asks for high image quality, and leaves the crew no room for heavy cases. That is the problem the FX5 plus the GM II zooms solves more neatly than anything else in our inventory. The documentary was the trigger, not the limit of what the camera is for.

Second, it falls in the right buying cycle. Q3 is when CINEFY restocks for the end of year project season. Getting the body in early means that by the Q4 peak the crew already knows it by hand, and knows how it behaves in Da Nang heat.

Third, this is the job of a rental house. Clients come to a rental house to reach the newest and best on the market without paying to own it. If our inventory always runs a beat behind the market, we lose the very reason we exist.

16-bit RAW recorded inside the body, and why that is rare

This is the technical difference worth talking about.

The camera records 16-bit X-OCN internally, with no external recorder. X-OCN is Sony’s compressed RAW format: it holds sensor data at 16-bit linear precision, which means the camera has not baked any tone curve into the picture. Until now that format lived on bodies costing several times more, and the FX5 is the first camera in this class to manage it.

What the number means once you sit down to grade: each colour channel carries 65,536 steps, roughly 64 times what 10-bit ProRes gives you. You see it most in soft gradients, in skin and in late afternoon sky. Shooting outdoors in Da Nang, where the light is not yours to control, that is real safety margin.

Sony splits recording into three compression levels: LT at roughly 389 Mbps in 4K24, plus two new levels, C1 at roughly 289 Mbps and C2 at roughly 232 Mbps. All three keep the 16-bit linear data and differ only in file size, so you can pick the level that suits your drives and your shooting days without giving up RAW.

The complete GM II zoom set is the other half

A body that records RAW is only half the story. The other half is glass, and that is the part usually skipped when cameras get compared.

The GM II zoom set runs 16-35, 24-70 and 70-200, covering wide to tele with no gap in focal length. All three focus quickly and hold a subject well. When you need to swing from a wide to a tight face in a few seconds, or when one person is both operating and pulling focus, those three replace a case of primes.

Put it together: a body small enough to hand hold all day, 16-bit RAW written inside it, and three lenses covering the whole range with fast autofocus. At this moment the FX5 is the only setup we found that meets all three at once. Other bodies that record RAW internally are distinctly bigger and heavier; bodies this small need an external recorder, and bolting a recorder on costs you the compactness that made you pick it.

Which projects should rent the Sony FX5

These are the groups we think gain the most, ordered by how often they come up in Da Nang.

TVC and commercial films. This group needs RAW most. Clients and agencies usually want a careful grade, and sometimes change colour direction after the cut is approved. 16-bit data leaves room for that without the picture breaking apart. The base ISO levels also help hold quality when one session moves from hard sun into an interior.

Corporate films and interviews. This group is won on sound more than picture. The XLR handle in the kit opens a 32-bit float audio path, so a subject who speaks quietly and then suddenly laughs will not clip, and you can bring the level back in post. For an interview you only get one pass at, that is insurance worth paying for.

Documentary and reportage. The problem is travel: go far, carry little, no second take of a scene. A compact body plus three zooms lets a small crew still deliver pictures that hold up on a large screen.

Music videos and creative work. The base ISO levels make night work, bar interiors and backlit setups viable with noise under control. RAW lets you push colour hard as a choice, rather than only correcting toward accurate.

Resort, hotel and travel films. This is the signature job of central Vietnam. The setting is usually brutally contrasty: a dark room looking out at a bright white sea. Wide dynamic range plus RAW is what keeps both the detail inside the room and the cloud outside the window.

Crews coming into Da Nang from elsewhere. If you fly in from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, renting on site is cheaper and quicker than checking a full kit as baggage. We hand the camera over with batteries, the right cards and lenses, so you can shoot the day you land.

Multi camera work in the studio. When you need one high quality body as the A camera alongside others, 16-bit RAW gives you the best master to pull a whole timeline into one look. Have a look at our studio rental in Da Nang if you need the space as well.

When the FX3 is still the better choice

The question we expect most often: why keep the FX3 now that the FX5 is here. Straight answer, these are two different brackets, not two rungs of one ladder.

Pick the FX3 when: the project has no deep grading stage, you need a light body running on a gimbal all day, you are making social content or work that has to turn around fast, or the budget needs to stay tight. On those jobs 16-bit RAW is something you pay for and never use.

Pick the FX5 when: there is a grading stage, the picture goes to a large screen or to broadcast, you need a proper audio path for interviews, or the setting has harsh contrast.

Clients who need the FX3 rarely need the FX5. It does not work the other way round: once a job calls for the FX5, the FX3 is not a substitute. So the FX5 arriving does not replace the FX3, it opens a group of projects we used to turn down. If you want the technical detail, we have a separate piece comparing the FX5 with the FX3 and FX6.

Why rent the FX5 from CINEFY

One thing up front: we are not the only place in Vietnam with an FX5. A few other rental houses have brought one in as well. The difference sits elsewhere.

The camera goes on jobs before it goes out on rental. The person handing it to you has shot with it, so your questions get answered from the floor instead of read back off a spec sheet.

Full kit, no missing link. The XLR handle travels with the camera, NP-SA100 batteries in the right series, CFexpress Type A cards rated for RAW. Those three differ from the FX3 kit, and they are where clients come up short when they rent a bare body somewhere else.

Lenses on hand. The complete GM II zoom set sits alongside our primes in the film equipment inventory in Da Nang. A combo rental usually works out better than piecing one together from several places.

Advice by project, not by price list. If your shoot only needs an FX3, we will tell you so. Pushing a client onto a more expensive body than the job needs is the fastest way to lose them on the second rental.

Frequently asked questions about renting the Sony FX5

How much does it cost to rent a Sony FX5 in Da Nang?
The rate depends on the configuration: body with the handle, which lenses come along, how many shooting days, and whether you need an operator. Send the details of your shoot and we will quote against what you actually need rather than post one generic number.

When is the camera available?
The body arrives in the inventory in Q3 2026. Message us with your shooting dates and we will hold a slot and confirm the exact day.

Does the FX5 rental include lenses?
Yes. We have the full GM II zoom set at 16-35, 24-70 and 70-200, plus a range of primes. A combo rental is usually better value than renting piece by piece.

How large are the files when the FX5 records RAW?
It depends on the compression level: LT at roughly 389 Mbps in 4K24, C1 at roughly 289 and C2 at roughly 232. C2 gives you noticeably lighter files and still keeps 16-bit. We advise on the right level for your running time and your drives at handover.

Does it shoot 4K at 240 frames per second yet?
Not yet. The highest speed modes sit in firmware V2.0, which Sony has scheduled for 2027. We say so in advance so nobody plans a shoot around a feature that is not there.

Can crews from other provinces rent it?
Yes. Many crews travelling from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to shoot in Da Nang rent on site instead of checking gear as baggage. Tell us your dates ahead and we will have the full kit ready.
