Sony FX5 vs FX3 vs FX6: What Changed?

A stacked sensor reads out faster, the root of everything else: less rolling shutter, higher frame rates, and enough bandwidth to write RAW inside the body. It records 5K at 4992 x 3328 in 3:2 Open Gate using the full sensor height up to 60p, plus 4K up to 120fps and HD up to 240fps.

Sony positions the FX5 two ways: a straight upgrade from the FX3, or a compact B and C camera alongside BURANO and VENICE 2, for car mounts, drone work and tight corners. For the jobs we take in Da Nang, the second framing rings truer.

How do the FX3, FX5 and FX6 actually differ?

The differences fall into three groups: the sensor, what the body records internally, and what is built into the chassis. The table lists only rows we could verify from the announcement. Cells we are unsure about are left blank.

What are shooters saying about the FX5, and what will nobody know until units ship?

Short version: the sensor and the recording side get praise, but daily handling is where the real discussion is. One thing worth stating plainly: every review available right now was written on a pre-production body lent by Sony, on firmware that is not the shipping version. Sony has also published a major update roadmap, so some limits below may change.

Six things hands-on shooters complain about most

• The camera reboots for roughly 10 seconds every time you change codec or frame rate. This is the most repeated complaint. Going from 60fps back to 24fps, or from RAW to a compressed format, forces a restart. On a commercial or a music video this barely matters because you can reset the shot. On a wedding, an event or a documentary, those ten seconds can swallow a moment you cannot ask for again.
• A silent trap worth knowing: select Open Gate then push to 120fps and the camera restarts and quietly drops out of RAW into a lighter compressed format without telling you clearly. If you are not watching, you think you are still recording RAW. Anyone renting this body should re-check the format after every reboot.
• The label says 5K while the camera is actually recording 4K. In compressed formats the imager mode line still reads 5K while the line directly under it reads 3840×2160. Two contradictory readings on one screen.
• Open Gate currently records in RAW only. Sony states this in its own launch material. Open Gate in a lighter compressed codec is on the roadmap for a major update from August 2027 onward. The direct consequence is card and drive consumption.
• No built-in ND. Unlike the FX6, the FX5 still needs external ND. For beach and midday exteriors around Da Nang that is not a footnote, it is a mandatory item in the kit.
• It cannot take stills. The FX3 can, the FX5 cannot, not even JPEG. There is a button that looks exactly like a shutter button but it is an assignable grab button. Anyone used to grabbing a few production stills mid-shoot will miss it.

Three details rarely mentioned that hit the shoot day directly

• Anamorphic disables both stabilisation and autofocus. The body offers desqueeze ratios for monitoring, but switching them on stops autofocus and IBIS. If the plan was to pair the FX5 with an autofocus E mount anamorphic and keep both, know this first.
• The XLR handle and the detachable viewfinder compete for the same mount. Sony states the viewfinder cannot be used together with accessories fitted to the multi interface shoe, which includes the handle. You pick professional audio or you pick the viewfinder.
• Waveform and vectorscope exist but are small and cannot be moved. Better than nothing, but do not expect them to replace an external monitor when exposure needs care.

What this means for shooting in Da Nang

Commercial, short film, music video and corporate crews barely touch these limits, because takes can be reset and the format is usually locked at call time. Wedding, event and documentary shooters should think harder about the reboot behaviour, and should lock frame rate before the event starts rather than switching mid-ceremony.

Which costs are not in the sticker price?

The body price is not the working price. A rental customer wants the complete kit, and a complete FX5 kit costs meaningfully more than 4,899.99 USD.

• The XLR handle sells separately at 798 USD. The 96 kHz 32 bit float audio path only runs through that handle.
• The viewfinder cannot share the mount with the XLR handle. Renters usually want both, so add third party accessory cost.
• New battery family. It does not share batteries with our FX3 kit, so budget dedicated batteries and chargers.
• Cards. Sony only guarantees X-OCN on VPG400 rated CFexpress Type A. PetaPixel measured real X-OCN bitrate at around 89 MB per second and found lower rated cards still recorded, with a warning. For rental stock we are not betting a client take on a warning message.

Which Da Nang projects suit the FX5, and should you wait?

It suits three situations: a compact B camera next to a larger A camera, projects needing vertical and horizontal cutdowns from one take, and tight spaces or aerial mounts. Less urgent for run and gun work needing fast ND changes, or jobs needing an SDI feed.

From May to August in Da Nang, our crew is used to someone holding an umbrella over the camera body between takes, and to scheduling around midday not for the talent but for the gear. The FX5 cooling design sounds like what we need, but it is still a line on a spec sheet.

Where the Vietnamese market stands

Several sellers here are taking orders at roughly 128 to 131 million dong for the body, while Sony Vietnam has not published a dong price. Official warranty is 24 months on the body, 12 months on bundled accessories such as batteries and chargers. As for rental, as of writing we could not find anyone in Vietnam renting an FX5. If you need one in August, plan a fallback.

Wait or buy

If you are on an FX3 and it works, we lean toward waiting: the headline features sit in next year firmware, real accessory cost runs well above the body price, and the heat question only gets answered once cameras reach working shooters in late August. If you need a colour matched B camera beside Sony A cameras and shoot a lot of Open Gate, look earlier.
