Cinema Camera Prices Split: Buy or Rent in 2026?

In September 2026 cinema camera prices moved in opposite directions. We read the manufacturer pages on 15 September and did the buy or rent maths.

In September 2026 cinema camera prices moved in opposite directions: Blackmagic cut the PYXIS and Cinema Camera 6K, Sony raised the Cinema Line. On 15 September 2026 we opened the manufacturer pages and read the numbers ourselves, and found something that matters more than the headline: a cheap body does not make a cheap shoot day.

What do the manufacturer pages say on 15 September 2026?

We did not copy these figures from anyone else. On the morning of 15 September 2026 we opened the Blackmagic PYXIS page, the Cinema Camera page and the Sony US store and read the price fields directly. We write what we read as ratios against the cheapest body on that list rather than as prices, because a manufacturer price sheet goes stale within weeks and the ratio between models does not. Blackmagic states in its own footer that the price includes duties but excludes sales tax and shipping.

BodyMultiple of the cheapest body, read 15 Sep 2026What the page shows

Sony FX6 (ILME-FX6V)4.16Sony US store

Read down the column and the shape of the market shows up. The floor is getting cheaper while the working tier gets more expensive. A full frame body that records RAW internally sits at the floor of that list, a Cinema Line body runs about 2.4 times the floor, and the one with proper on board audio about 4.2 times.

What about Vietnam pricing? We have not verified official Vietnamese retail prices for either line, so there is not a single converted figure in this article. Multiplying a US price by today exchange rate and calling it a Vietnamese price is the fastest way to send a reader to a dealer who quotes something else entirely.

Why do the trade reports disagree with the manufacturer page?

Blackmagic announced the cut on 4 September 2026 and the trade press carried it, Newsshooter among them. Several reports put both the Cinema Camera 6K and the PYXIS 6K below what the manufacturer page shows today.

The gap runs roughly 10 to 13% on every model we checked, in the same direction each time, and Blackmagic states that its listed price includes duties. It is plausible that the reports quoted a figure before that line item. That is our reading, we have not asked the company, so please do not treat it as settled.

There is one more layer. On 9 September Y.M.Cinema noted listings still asking well above the new price. Three numbers coexisted in a single week: the list price, the reported price, and the price a buyer actually pays.

One thing you can do with this: before you commit, open the manufacturer page for your own territory, screenshot it with the date, then ask the dealer for a written quote with an expiry date. That is exactly what we do before any item enters our equipment rental list.

Does a cheap body mean a cheap package?

Directly under the body list, the same PYXIS page carries an accessory list. We read it in the same visit on 15 September 2026, because this is the part that decides the real number.

Accessory on the PYXIS pageFraction of one PL mount body, read 15 Sep 2026Why a crew needs it
PYXIS Pro Handle (with OLED viewfinder)0.41shooting handheld in sun, the rear screen is close to useless
PYXIS Monitor Kit (monitor with mounts)0.21so the director and the client can see the frame
PYXIS Monitor (monitor only)0.14the stripped down version of the above
URSA Cine EVF0.83a separate viewfinder for long handheld days
PYXIS Pro Grip0.06side grip with record button and zoom rocker
Monitor side bracket and rosette plate0.07 and 0.04for handgrips and extension arms

Add up the smallest configuration a crew would actually roll with: a PL mount body plus the Pro Handle plus the Monitor Kit comes to about 1.6 times the price of the body on its own. That is before a CFexpress card, before V mount batteries and a charger, before a tripod, before a single lens, before a case, and before any tax or shipping.

At 1.6 times the body, this is not a budget cinema camera any more. It lands in the same band as a full frame Cinema Line body. That is what a price cut headline leaves out, and it is why we added the numbers up here instead of quoting the headline.

What do people who have handled the PYXIS 6K say?

We do not have this camera, so we cannot verify any of it ourselves. The limits below come from reviewers who have held the body, ProVideo Coalition among them, and we are reading them as people who shoot in Da Nang.

  • Around 40 minutes on small batteries. A full day means buying a V mount kit and a charger. On a rental order this is the item clients forget, and forgetting it stops the shoot halfway.
  • No continuous autofocus. Fine for commercials, music videos and product work where someone pulls focus and you can go again. Painful for fast interviews, documentary, or anything that only happens once.
  • Cooling draws air in at the bottom and exhausts at the top. The body is therefore more open to its environment. In Da Nang, salt carried on the sea breeze and the damp weeks are what kill gear fastest; we wrote separately about keeping a camera alive on hot outdoor shoots.

Pushing the other way: LensRentals, a large US rental house, stocks the PYXIS 6K. The rental trade has accepted this line, so it is not a hobby camera. Cheaper and harder to operate are two separate facts.

The cheaper the camera gets, the less the human part of the day changes.

How many days a year do you actually shoot?

This is the question that decides it, not the sticker price. And we answer it with our own numbers rather than a feeling.

From the CINEFY rental calendar for the period 15 August to 14 September 2026, the store logged 10 orders. The Sony FX3 body, the workhorse of the shelf, went out on only one order, but it stayed out for six straight days, roughly 20% of the days in the period. Lighting went out three times, and for the first time in months a large fixture left the shelf, paired with a portable power station on the same order. Gimbal and wireless mic went out twice each, and on both occasions they travelled together. The anamorphic lens set: zero, for the second period running.

That table says one thing plainly. Even a rental house, with the gear already on the shelf and someone actively looking for work for it, only got its most expensive body out of the door for six days in thirty. If you are buying a body for your own projects, be honest about your number first.

A five line calculation you can copy

  1. A = days you actually rolled in the last twelve months. Count them in your calendar, do not estimate.
  2. B = the day rate for the configuration you really need, not for a bare body.
  3. Annual rental spend = A times B.
  4. C = the full purchase price at a local dealer, plus mandatory accessories, cards, batteries, a case, insurance and one year of servicing.
  5. If A times B is under roughly one third of C, rent. Only buy when A times B passes C inside eighteen months and you have proper dry storage, someone who checks gear after each job, and a history of turning work down over double bookings.

Line five is the hard one. The real cost of ownership is not the first payment; it is the dry cabinet, the repair shipment, and the months the camera sits still. Our per model rates are in the camera rental price guide, and if you are weighing up Sony bodies, FX5 against FX3 and FX6 goes deeper.

Frequently asked questions

How much did Blackmagic cut cinema camera prices?

On the manufacturer page read 15 September 2026, the PYXIS 6K sits about 1.28 times the cheapest body on that list and the PL version about 1.41, while the PYXIS 12K carries a 20% off badge that moves it from about 3.32 times down to 2.66. Several trade reports quoted figures roughly 10 to 13% lower; the manufacturer page is the one to trust.

Did Sony raise cinema camera prices in Vietnam?

We have not verified official Vietnamese retail prices, so we will not claim it. What we read directly is that on 15 September 2026 the Sony US store listed the ILME-FX3A at about 2.45 times the cheapest Blackmagic body that day and the ILME-FX6V at about 4.16 times, above the figures the trade press carried earlier in the year.

Can you shoot straight away after buying a PYXIS 6K?

Not really. The smallest configuration a crew would roll with is body plus handle with viewfinder plus monitor kit, about 1.6 times the body on its own at 15 September 2026 list prices, and that still excludes CFexpress cards, V mount batteries, a tripod, lenses and a case.

Does CINEFY rent the Blackmagic PYXIS?

Our shelf runs mainly on the Sony FX line. For items we do not hold, CINEFY sources them per order through partners and needs a few days notice. Call 0779 771 234 with your shoot dates and we will tell you yes or no the same day.

What does camera rental cost in Da Nang per day?

On rates updated 24 August 2026, a Sony FX3 full set is 2,600,000 VND per day, a Sony FX6 full set is 3,500,000 VND, and the Blazar 1.5x full frame anamorphic set is 1,500,000 VND. All figures exclude 8% VAT.

I shoot twice a month, should I buy or rent?

Twice a month is roughly 24 days a year. At that rate annual rental spend usually stays well under a third of the full purchase price, so renting almost always wins, especially when each job needs a different configuration.

Do the rates include VAT?

No. Every figure in this article is before 8% VAT. When we quote a specific shoot we separate gear, VAT and delivery so you can see each line.

Can I hire an operator with the gear?

Yes, if you want one. You can take the equipment on its own, or with a technician who travels with it. Our technician works to your crew direction and does not take over the director or producer role.

Weighing a purchase against a rental for a specific job?

Send us the shoot dates, the location and what you need to film. CINEFY comes back within 24 hours with a suggested configuration and a line by line quote, even when the honest answer is that you should buy rather than rent.
