How to Shoot Green Screen: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Set Up the Green Screen

Ensure the green backdrop is wrinkle-free and evenly stretched. Any creases or folds create shadows that make keying difficult. At CINEFY, our permanent cyclorama wall eliminates this problem entirely.

Step 2: Light the Background Evenly

This is the most critical step. The green screen needs even, shadow-free illumination. Use at least 2 soft lights aimed at the backdrop from 45-degree angles. The goal is consistent brightness across the entire green surface.

Step 3: Light Your Subject Separately

Your talent needs their own lighting setup, completely independent from the background lights. Use standard three-point lighting: key light, fill light, and backlight. The backlight (hair light) is especially important to separate the subject from the green background.

Step 4: Maintain Distance

Keep at least 2-3 meters between your subject and the green screen. This prevents green light from bouncing onto the subject (called “green spill”), which makes keying much harder.

Step 5: Camera Settings

Shoot at the highest resolution and bit-depth your camera supports. Use a low ISO for minimal noise. Shoot at f/4-f/5.6 to keep the subject sharp while slightly softening the background. Record in 4:2:2 or RAW if possible: 4:2:0 compression makes keying noticeably harder.

Step 6: Post-Production Keying

Software options for chroma keying: DaVinci Resolve (free), Adobe After Effects (Keylight), Final Cut Pro, or dedicated tools like Boris FX Primatte. Start with a rough key, then refine edges, suppress spill, and composite your background.

Common Green Screen Mistakes

Uneven lighting: The #1 mistake. Hot spots or shadows on the green screen create keying nightmares. Invest time in even background lighting before rolling camera.

Subject too close: Standing right against the green screen causes spill and hard shadows. Minimum 2 meters distance.

Wrong clothing: Never wear green (or similar colors). Also avoid fine patterns, sheer fabrics, and highly reflective jewelry which can pick up green reflection.

Low-quality codec: Shooting in heavily compressed formats (4:2:0 8-bit) makes clean keying very difficult. Always shoot in the highest quality your camera allows.

Motion blur: Fast movement creates blurred edges that are hard to key. Use faster shutter speeds (1/120 or higher) for action scenes on green screen.
