Two-Person Podcast Audio Setup: Mics and Recorder

A two-person podcast needs two mics and two separate channels. Mic placement, three setups with real Da Nang rental prices, and the levels to aim for.

A two-person podcast needs two mics and two separate recording channels, so each voice can be fixed on its own in the edit. Use cardioid dynamic mics about a fist from the mouth, back to back. A standalone recorder is optional, but a four-input model such as the Zoom H6 leaves you two spare inputs as backup.

Recording a two-person podcast sounds easy: put one mic in the middle of the table. Then in the edit there is always a cough, a talk-over, and no way to fix just one person because both voices share a channel. This guide covers four decisions to settle before you press record: how many mics, where to put them, whether you need a standalone recorder, and how to set levels. Rental prices come from the real CINEFY price list.

How many mics for two people, and why each needs its own channel

Two people need two mics, one each, plus a recording device with at least two inputs and a separate gain knob for each. Violet Recording makes exactly this point in its guide to recording two people: each mic goes to its own mono track, recorded at 24-bit, and an interface with a single input cannot do it.

Signal path diagram for a two-person podcast: each mic plugs into its own recorder input and becomes its own mono track.
Each mic goes into one input and each input becomes one mono track. The two remaining inputs of a four-input recorder stay free for a third guest or a backup mic.

The reason is practical: coughs, talk-overs and volume differences between two voices can only be fixed when each voice sits on its own track. One mic in the middle of the table blends both voices into a single channel, and once blended they cannot be separated.

As for mic type, the same source recommends dynamic mics for two people in an untreated room, because dynamic mics pick up less room sound and less of the other speaker than condensers. Condensers only make sense once the room has good acoustic treatment.

How far from the mouth, and which way do the mics face?

Dynamic mics usually sit 2 to 3 inches (about 5 to 8 cm) from the mouth, according to the University of Pittsburgh recording guide. The same page suggests placing two cardioid mics 180 degrees apart to reduce bleed. Violet Recording gives a larger figure, 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm). When the sources differ, start at one fist, record a test, and back off if you hear plosives on p and b sounds.

Top-down diagram: two cardioid dynamic mics back to back, each 5 to 8 cm from the mouth, speakers about 1 m apart.
Top-down view: each mic faces the mouth of its own speaker, while its rear, where a cardioid pickup is weakest, faces the person across the table.
A calculation few people do. Say the mic is 8 cm from your mouth and the two speakers sit 100 cm apart. The other voice travels 12.5 times farther, which is about 22 dB weaker in free field (20 times log10 of 12.5). In a room with reflective walls the real difference is smaller. That is why the mic must be close to the mouth, not placed far away with the gain turned up to compensate.

The 3:1 rule gets mentioned a lot: per podcastvideos.com, the distance between two mics should be at least three times the distance from each mic to its speaker. With mics 8 cm from the mouth, the mics only need to be more than 24 cm apart, which any normal podcast table clears easily. The weak spot is gain: the RØDE PodMic has a sensitivity of -57 dB (1.6 mV at 94 dB SPL), weighs 937 g and needs no phantom power, so it wants a preamp with enough gain and a sturdy arm. The more gain you add, the more of the other voice you also lift.

If the two voices sound thin, as if talking in a box, the usual cause is a phase clash between the mics. Violet Recording suggests inverting the polarity of one track or nudging it by a millisecond or two in the edit, then listening for fuller voices.

Do you need a standalone recorder? Three setups with real rental prices

A standalone recorder is optional. If you already own an audio interface with at least two preamps, plugging into the computer is enough. A recorder earns its place when you do not want to depend on a laptop, want to record to a memory card, or must carry the kit to the guest. The only question then is how many inputs stay free after plugging in two mics. B&H lists the Zoom H6 Essential with four combo XLR/TRS inputs, 48 V phantom power, and 24-bit or 32-bit float recording. The smaller Zoom H4n Pro has two XLR inputs.

Ask about boom arms and XLR cables when you book each mic. Anything outside the price list is supplied to order by CINEFY rather than listed in stock.

On real demand, from the CINEFY rental calendar (provisional, since the calendar is still being back-filled): between 29/08 and 05/10/2026 the Zoom H4n Pro had 2 standalone rentals, and of 16 rentals from 05/09 to 05/10, 3 included audio gear. The DJI Mic 2 can also record internally in 32-bit float per Videomaker, which makes it a compact backup. To see what 32-bit float does and does not save, read 32-bit float vs a separate audio recorder.

How do you set levels without clipping or going too quiet?

According to Violet Recording, voice peaks should sit around -12 to -6 dBFS: the loudest voice near -6, the quietest near -12. For example, the host speaks loudly and after setting gain peaks at -7; the guest is quieter and peaks at -12. Both still leave headroom for when someone laughs loudly or interrupts.

The orange zone is the peak level to aim for on each voice. The red zone near 0 dBFS is digital clipping.

Three steps: have both people talk as if mid-conversation for 30 seconds, set each channel gain so peaks land in the orange zone, then play it back on headphones before the real recording. This test is also a step in the podcast production process at the CINEFY studio.

A 32-bit float recorder such as the Zoom H6 Essential reduces the risk of digital clipping, but it cannot rescue distortion from the mic or preamp. Headphones remain a step you do not skip.

Frequently asked questions

How many mics does a two-person podcast need?

Two, one per person, each going to its own recording channel. With a third guest, add a mic and an input.

Can two people share one mic?

Only for a throwaway recording. Both voices land on a single channel, so you cannot fix a cough or an interruption on one person alone. Anything you plan to keep deserves two mics.

How far should the mic be from the mouth?

For dynamic mics the University of Pittsburgh suggests 2 to 3 inches (about 5 to 8 cm), while Violet Recording says 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm). When sources differ, start at one fist, record a test, then adjust.

Do I need a separate recorder?

Not necessarily. If you already have an audio interface with at least two preamps, plug straight into the computer. A standalone recorder helps when you do not want to depend on a laptop, want to record to a memory card, or need to carry the kit to another location.

How much does it cost to rent a two-person podcast audio kit in Da Nang?

From the 24/08/2026 price list, excluding 8% VAT: two PodMics with a Zoom H4n Pro are VND 800,000 per day, two PodMics with a Zoom H6 are VND 1,000,000 per day, and a wireless DJI Mic 2 is VND 350,000 per day. A half day is 70% of the day rate.

Which mic suits an untreated room?

A cardioid dynamic mic. According to Violet Recording, dynamic mics pick up less room sound and less of the other person than condensers do. A condenser only pays off once the room is treated.

Why do the two voices sound thin, as if in a box?

Usually a phase clash between the mics. Violet Recording suggests inverting the polarity of one track or nudging it by a millisecond or two while editing, then listening for fuller voices.
