Hiring a film crew in Da Nang comes down to three decisions: which roles you actually need on the day, whether those people bring their own kit or you rent it separately, and how early you book against the Central Vietnam weather window. This guide covers all three, using the numbers we book from.

Why does the right crew decide your shoot in Da Nang?

Crew in Da Nang is a small, overlapping pool. The same DPs, gaffers and sound recordists work across most of the productions that pass through the city, so the question is rarely whether anyone is free. It is whether the person who is free that week has already shot the kind of day you are about to shoot, and whether they arrive with the kit the day needs.

CINEFY has been booking crew in Da Nang since 2022, across more than 200 projects, and keeps a working list of the people we have actually shot with in each department. Here’s our complete guide to hiring a film crew in Da Nang.

Which crew roles do you actually need?

Five roles on a Da Nang film crew: the DP is always there, the other four are added according to camera count, location and audio needs.

Director of Photography (DP/DoP)

The DP is responsible for the visual look of your project. In Da Nang, experienced DPs are quoted per project, depending on experience and the camera package they bring and equipment they bring. A good DP will also help with location scouting and lighting design.

Camera Operator

For multi-camera setups, you’ll need dedicated camera operators. Rates depend on experience and whether they bring their own rig. Many operators in Da Nang are proficient with Sony FX3, Blackmagic, and RED cameras, all of which are available for rent through CINEFY’s equipment catalog.

Sound Recordist

Clean audio is critical. A sound recordist with their own gear (boom mic, wireless lavs, recorder) quotes per day based on kit and scope. Learn more about audio recording for film.

Gaffer / Lighting Technician

Lighting crew is essential for studio and indoor shoots. A gaffer with an assistant is quoted per project. For basic setups, check our guide on 5 lighting setups every creator should know.

Production Assistant (PA)

PAs handle logistics, talent management, and on-set coordination. Day rates are among the most affordable on a set. Essential for outdoor location shoots in Da Nang.

Freelance platforms: Vietnamese film Facebook groups, ProductionHub, and local film community networks are good for finding individual freelancers.

Film schools: Da Nang University of Architecture and nearby Ho Chi Minh City film schools produce talented graduates looking for project experience.

What should you know before working with a Vietnamese crew?

Language: Most senior crew members in Da Nang speak basic English, but having a bilingual production coordinator is highly recommended for international productions.

Contracts: Always sign a clear agreement covering day rates, overtime, meal allowances, and deliverables. Standard crew day is 10 hours.

Meals on set: Providing meals is standard practice in Vietnam: budget 100,000 to 150,000 VND per person per meal, which is the range we put on our own call sheets in Da Nang.

Weather planning: Da Nang’s rainy season (October-February) affects outdoor shoots. Always have backup plans and communicate weather protocols with crew.

What does CINEFY do differently when sourcing crew?

As Da Nang’s full-service production house, CINEFY offers:

  • Crew we have worked with before: DP, camera operator, focus puller, gaffer, grip, sound recordist, sound mixer, DIT and production assistant, booked as a team of 2 on the smallest package and up to 10 with a dedicated transport van on the largest
  • One-stop solution: Crew + equipment + studio under one roof
  • Project management: We handle logistics, permits, and coordination
  • Bilingual support: English and Vietnamese production management

When is the hardest time to book a crew in Da Nang?

Central Vietnam has a narrow shooting window. Outdoor work is reliable from February to August; October and November are the rain and flood months; and TVC season concentrates into March to May. That squeezes most of the year into roughly seven usable months, which is why the same freelance DPs, gaffers and sound recordists get asked for the same weeks by everyone at once.

In practice: for a standard corporate or brand shoot, ask for names two to three weeks out. For anything inside the March to May window, four to six weeks. If your date is fixed by a launch or an event, lock the DP first, because the DP usually decides who else is on the call sheet: operators, focus pullers and gaffers travel with people they have already worked with.

The same window applies to gear. Our own rental calendar for the period 15 August to 14 September 2026 ran 10 orders, and the longest single booking that month tied up a camera body for six consecutive days. One project can take a piece of kit, or a person, out of circulation for a working week.

What does the crew bring, and what do you still have to rent?

Diagram of three real CINEFY rental orders from 15 August to 14 September 2026 showing budget gaps when hiring a crew: a Sony FX3 that left without a lens, a 600D LED sent with a portable power station, gimbals sent with wireless mics
A day rate pays for the person, not always the kit: three real orders show lenses, power and audio are where crew budgets usually slip.

This is where budgets slip. A day rate covers the person, not always the kit, and the gaps are predictable. Three patterns from the same CINEFY rental period, 15 August to 14 September 2026:

  • The one Sony FX3 order that month went out as body, batteries, charging dock and an HDMI cable, with no lens attached. The DP brought glass. If yours does not, lenses are a separate line on your rental list.
  • The large LED order, a 600D class fixture, left the warehouse together with a portable power station. A light that size sags on ordinary household power, so a gaffer taking a location without a three phase supply has to budget for power, not just for lights.
  • Wireless mics went out with a gimbal on both gimbal orders that period. The moment the camera starts moving, sound has to leave the camera.

None of this surprises the crew. It surprises the budget, which is why we ask about it before quoting.

Six questions to ask before you confirm anyone:

  • Are you quoting labour only, or does a camera body come with you?
  • Which lenses are yours, and which do I rent?
  • Do you have a regular second shooter, and are they free that day?
  • Have you shot this location before, and does it need a permit?
  • What power is on site, and do we need a generator or a battery station?
  • Who is on audio once we move to handheld or a gimbal?

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to hire a full film crew in Da Nang?

A basic crew (DP, camera op, sound, gaffer, PA) is quoted as a single bundle. Full production crews with director, makeup, and assistants are quoted per project. CINEFY quotes crew, equipment and studio as one package so the gaps between them are priced before the shoot day, not after it.

Can I hire English-speaking crew in Da Nang?

Yes. Most senior crew members speak conversational English. For international productions requiring fluent English communication, CINEFY provides bilingual production coordinators at no extra charge when you book our production services.

How far in advance should I book crew in Da Nang?

For standard projects, 2-3 weeks advance booking is recommended. During peak season (March-September), book 4-6 weeks ahead. Rush bookings are possible through CINEFY’s crew network but may have limited availability.

Do I need permits to film in Da Nang?

Yes, filming in public spaces in Da Nang requires permits from the local authorities. The process takes 5-7 business days. CINEFY handles all permit applications as part of our production management services.

Do crew rates change between peak and off season?

Availability moves more than the rate does. Through the TVC window of March to May and the dry months to August, senior names go first and a rush booking narrows to whoever is left. October and November are quieter on the coast because of rain, but then weather contingency days matter more to your budget than any day rate.

Can I hire one or two crew and cover the rest myself?

Yes. Our bookings run from two people on the smallest jobs up to around ten with a separate transport vehicle on the largest. A two person day usually means one shooter plus one person splitting sound and lights, which works for interviews and short form, and stops working the moment you need a moving camera and clean audio at the same time.
